About Me

Neuropsychiatrist & Medical Psychotherapist in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, specialist in treatment of Complex OCD

Dr Himanshu Tyagi

Dr Himanshu Tyagi  ·  MBBS  ·  MRCPsych  ·  FRCPsych  ·  PhD

I am a consultant neuropsychiatrist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), Queen Square, and I specialise in the treatment of complex obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related conditions, including Tourette syndrome, body dysmorphic disorder and neuropsychiatric comorbidities. I am trained and experienced in all three treatment modalities for OCD (medication, exposure-based cognitive behavioural therapy, and neuroscience-based treatments such as deep brain stimulation), and I actively research each of them. I hold a Certificate of Completion of Training in medical psychotherapy (CBT) and I am on the GMC specialist register.

I run the specialist stream of the national adult Tourette syndrome service for patients with a dual diagnosis of Tourette syndrome and OCD, with a weekly outpatient clinic at Queen Square that accepts direct referrals from GPs and specialists anywhere in the country. Since 2023 I have been consultant neuropsychiatrist to the Unit of Functional Neurosurgery at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, where I am developing the complex OCD and BDD neuromodulation pathway. Previously I was consultant psychiatrist in neurorehabilitation at the National Hospital (2016–2023) and, from 2021 to 2025, I led the nationally commissioned inpatient specialist service for OCD at Priory Hospital North London.

Before joining UCLH at Queen Square in 2016, I coordinated the MRC-UCL randomised controlled trial of deep brain stimulation for severe, treatment-refractory OCD (2012–2016) at the UCL Institute of Neurology. I completed my basic specialist training at St Mary's Hospital, London, and my advanced training at the National Service for OCD & BDD at Springfield University Hospital, where my work was recognised with a national award from the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2012.

I co-founded the Royal College of Psychiatrists' faculty network for Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders (OCARD) in 2012, served as its vice-chair for a decade and have co-chaired it since 2022; I also run a special interest group for psychiatry registrars in neuropsychiatry. I speak and write about public understanding of OCD (two out of three people with the condition remain undiagnosed), and in October 2025 I led the inaugural OCD Neuroscience Awareness Week at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. An early advocate of technology and AI in healthcare, I have published several books for medical students and co-founded RxPG, an international educational network for medical students. I consult in English, Hindi and Punjabi.
